My great-grandparents, Eléni and Nikólaos Kóntos.
Greek is a language where accentuation can change the meaning of a word. My yaya always liked to emphasize that the accent in my grand-father’s last name was on the first o, because the name came from the Italian word “conte”, meaning “count”, whereas kontós means '“short”, a much less interesting last name indeed! :D

A class picture from Nafplio’s school, which used to be in the building which now serves as the public library.
My yaya is towards the bottom left - count 4 girls starting from the left of the bottom row, then up one row: my grandma is the only one not facing the camera, almost in profile. A rebel spirit already… ;)
Circa 1933.
Although my grandparents lived in Belgium, they always went back to Greece during the holidays. Here they are at a beach near Nafplio:
My grandma is sitting on a chair with my youngest aunt Anna-Maria on her lap, my mom Stássa is sitting on the left and my eldest aunt Eléni to the right.
