Welcome to our family home! It is ideally situated in the heart of the old town, literally 1mn on foot from many restaurants, cafes, and the main square of Syntagma. This Venetian house built in 1850 was gifted to my yaya (grandmother), Erasmía “Máki” Kontou, as her dowry when she got married in 1939. Like her 4 sisters, she was born right here in the old city of Nafplio, in the beautiful neoclassic hotel To Neon, which my great-grandparents Nikolaos and Eleni were managing at the time (see photo below, it was sadly destroyed in the late 60s) - it had breathtaking views on the Bourtzi fortress.

Around Nafplio
In the heart of Nafplio you can visit the Venetian fortress of Palamidi (either climb its 1000 steps or take a cab or bus to the main entrance), the Frank fortress of Akronafplia, Syntagma square and its archeological museum, the old mosque which briefly became the first national Parliament of the liberated Hellenic Republic in 1825, the old cannons pointed at the sea, the Bourtzi fortress which was used to defend the harbour but also as a prison - and of course you must take the time to lose yourself in the myriad small alleys that climb all the way up and offer the most gorgeous views on the town and the surrounding sea.
But all around Argolida, just a short drive away, you can visit historic sites such as ancient Mycenes, ancient Epidaurus, the fortress of Argos, the ancient Mycenean site of Tyrins, the ruins of ancient Assini (followed by a swim in the limpid waters below), etc…
Old Nafplio
Top: Syntagma square, with the archeological museum straight ahead.
Below: an old Ottoman fountain, the bourtzi fortress, the war museum and one of the XVIIth century cannons.
The old stone walk around Nafplio offers gorgeous sea views and reaches a path that goes all the way to Karathonas beach.
Ancient theatre of Epidaurus
The ancient theatre of Epidaurus from the 4th century BC (Epidavros in Greek) is only a 30mn drive from Nafplio. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Go visit the site, including the ancient stadium and the museum of the ancient god of medicine Aclepius, and stay in the evening to watch a play in what is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics. It has been in use for nearly 2500 years!
Beaches
There are many gorgeous beaches all around Nafplio, starting with Arvanitia, just below the Palamidi fortress (10mn on foot from the house), and Karathonas beach just 5mn away by car or 30mn on foot, but also Plaka beach, Assini beach, Tolo beach... The list goes on.
